About The Pan African University (PAU)

The Pan African University (PAU) is a flagship Institution of the African Union Commission, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This was the culmination of the decision of the Assembly of Heads of State and Governments of the African Union to create the Pan African University (EX.CL/579(XVII).  It has five Institutes namely Life and Earth Sciences (including Health and Agriculture) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria; Governance, Humanities, and Social Sciences at University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon; Science, Technology and Innovation at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya; Water and Energy (including Climatic change) at University Tlemcen, Algeria and the Institute of Space Sciences, South Africa.


We are recruiting suitably qualified candidates to fill the following positions below:
  1. Administrative Officer (Institute of Humanities)
  2. Press Officer
  3. Assistant Book Editor
  4. Research Assistant

1. Administrative Officer (Institute of Humanities)

Job Summary

  • The Administrative Officer provides vital support to the Director, faculty, and other administrative staff in all matters related to filing, recording, documentation, and meetings.
  • The role ensures smooth day-to-day operations by managing administrative processes, maintaining accurate records, and facilitating effective communication across the department.

Job Description
The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to faculty members and other administrators to facilitate teaching, research, and departmental activities.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports, presentations, and official correspondence, while maintaining accurate and well-organized records.
  • Maintain and provide backup support for records of student attendance, staff meetings, and other departmental activities.
  • Ensure that records of the Institute’s activities, programs, and events are updated, well documented, and easily retrievable.
  • Support processes and initiatives that promote staff and student welfare, addressing needs and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Undertake any other duties assigned by the Director to ensure the smooth running of the Institute’s operations.

Qualifications

  • A good First Degree in Business Administration, Management, or a related discipline.
  • Prior experience in an administrative, research, or academic support role will be an added advantage.
  • Membership or certification from any relevant professional body is an added advantage.

Requirements / Competencies:

  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

2. Press Officer

Job Summary

  • The Press Officer is responsible for the sales, marketing, and promotion of published and upcoming titles of the PAU Press.
  • The role encompasses all activities aimed at expanding the reach of the Press to new publics and markets, ensuring visibility, accessibility, and growth.
  • Ultimately, the Press Officer manages the internal and external publics of the PAU Press effectively and efficiently, fostering strong relationships and building a positive brand image.

Job Description
The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage the sales, promotion, and marketing of published and upcoming titles across digital channels, bookshops, and other outlets.
  • Prepare sales and promotion reports, maintain databases, and regularly update the Press website and social media with new titles and activities.
  • Identify target audiences for direct marketing and build/maintain in-house contact lists of journalists, academics, and public intellectuals for campaigns.
  • Organize seminars, book launches, and related promotional events to increase visibility and readership of PAU Press titles.
  • Generate engaging content and create promotional materials in both digital and print formats to support marketing campaigns.
  • Assist in implementing PAU Press programmes and strategies and carry out other duties as assigned by the line manager.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication, Marketing, English, or related field.
  • Prior experience in publishing, communications, PR, or media relations is an added advantage.

Requirements / Competencies:

  • Strong sales, marketing, and promotional skills with proven ability to drive results.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for drafting press releases, promotional materials, and media correspondence.
  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools, social media management, and content creation.
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze market trends and develop strategies for expanding readership and sales.
  • Creativity and innovation in developing promotional campaigns and marketing materials.
  • High level of organizational and time-management skills to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously

3. Assistant Book Editor

Job Summary

  • The candidate will be responsible for content editing, proofreading, blurb writing and layout design of manuscripts. This also involves provision of accurate content for Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) Press communications, liaising with authors, commissioning manuscripts and/or all activities aimed at expanding the reach of Pan-Atlantic University Press to new publics.

Job Description

  • The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Review and revise manuscript(s) for accuracy and quality.
  • Ensure correct tone, voice, clarity, flow and structure of manuscript(s).
  • Communicate and work with author(s) and production team to ensure that manuscripts are published in a timely manner.
  • Review book proposals.
  • Identify and follow up the scholarly peer-review of manuscripts.
  • Write blurbs and artist briefs for cover designer.
  • Discuss book project(s) with team.
  • Compile and update style guide as required.
  • Format and Layout manuscript(s) in Adobe InDesign
  • Collaborate with team to come up with fresh and creative ideas, keeping audience in mind.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Assist in implementing the programmes, strategies of the PAU Press, and any other related duties as may be assigned by the line manager.

Qualifications

  • BSc or BA in English, Communication or related field.

Requirements / Competencies:

  • Proficiency in InDesign (or any other layout tool)
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Innovative creativity, working independently and meeting targets.
  • Highly organized and detailed-oriented.
  • Flexible and proactive.
  • Must be able to manage workload by establishing priorities and be detail-oriented.

4. Research Assistant

Job Summary

  • The Research Assistant will provide vital support to supervising faculty by contributing to various research-related activities, including data collection, analysis, and publication preparation.
  • The role requires strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, organizational capabilities, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • The Research Assistant will collaborate with faculty to produce high-quality academic outputs while ensuring adherence to deadlines and research standards.

  • Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Advanced online research skills and proficiency in transcribing.
  • Knowledge of proofreading, referencing standards, and fieldwork implementation.
  • Familiarity with research methodologies and techniques.
