Job Purpose

Reporting to the Head of Delegation (HoD), the Political Adviser III provides expert political analysis and strategic advice to the delegation. The role involves monitoring political, conflict, and security dynamics, managing high-level stakeholder relations, and supporting the ICRC’s humanitarian diplomacy efforts in Nigeria. The adviser will help design and implement effective engagement strategies with authorities and key partners to strengthen ICRC’s influence, acceptance, and operational impact.


Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyse, and provide advice on political, conflict, and security developments in Nigeria, including policies and positions of government, opposition, NGOs, and the diplomatic community.

  • Build, maintain, and expand a high-level network of stakeholders (government officials, parliamentarians, opposition leaders, embassies, think-tanks, etc.).

  • Facilitate access and engagement opportunities for the delegation’s management with relevant stakeholders.

  • Support strategic engagement and dialogue with Nigerian authorities, identifying areas of convergence with ICRC priorities.

  • Produce analytical reports, briefing notes, and documentation to inform internal stakeholders and support humanitarian diplomacy.

  • Organize briefings for delegation staff on political, security, and cultural contexts.

  • Contribute to internal coordination across departments to strengthen external influence and diplomatic impact.

  • Advise on issues relating to privileges, immunities, ICRC mandate, and exemptions with government authorities.

  • Collaborate with Field Security and Crisis Management teams to enhance ICRC’s acceptance, respect, and operational security.

  • Support management in understanding tribal/power group dynamics at government levels.


Requirements & Profile

  • University Degree (Master’s degree preferred).

  • 6–10 years’ professional experience in political affairs, diplomacy, programme management, or related roles within governments, NGOs, or international organizations.

  • Proven expertise in political analysis, strategic planning, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Strong ability to build and maintain high-level networks and relationships.

  • Excellent diplomatic, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and oral, in English).

  • Strong understanding of Nigerian political, tribal, and security dynamics.

  • Valid work permit to work in Nigeria.
